What we do

When children come for counselling they often can’t tell us about their difficulties. They may not have the vocabulary to tell us or they may not know what the problem is – all they know is that they feel pretty bad or things are not going too well.

Our work is often non-directive.  This means that we don’t lead the session or set the agenda. We let the child take the lead and accept whatever they bring to us in each session and work with that.

We often work metaphorically. For example we may explore a feeling the child may have by talking about the same feeling shown by a character in a story. So we may write or read stories; we may draw or paint or make models; we may play board games or use sand trays or doll’s houses. Play and Art are important mediums which children are comfortable in using to express themselves.
